Measurement for Space

Sketch of LISA constellation

The group, in collaboration with industrial partners (notably Thales-Alenia and ESA contractors), plays a role in space techology development focusing on the metrological aspect: from assembly procedures to minimize misalignment uncertainties to supporting satellite designers with uncertainties assessment and analysis.

The group is also a partner of the joint phD school in Science, Technology and Measurement for Space of the research center CISAS , created by a consortium of universities headed by the University of Padua, to provide further academic and practical training for physicis and engineers working in the Space field. For information on the phD school and how to apply see the CISAS website

The main projects the group was involved in are Sentinel 3, Planck, and LISA Pathfinder. On the latter the group is actually working at the final stages of flight model assembling to minimize the misalignment of the decoupling system responsible for releasing the test mass once the satellite is in free fall, in order to reduce any perturbation to the test mass, which would result in an incorrect reading from the laser interferometry telescope. For more information on LISA and LISA pathfinder refer to the ESA website Verification stage of LISA PF Caging mechanism assembly
